Texas’ Alex Dupree has been crafting and recording songs for the better part of three decades.
Growing up in Dallas’ turn-of-the-millennium musical milieu (which helped birth the careers of local greats such as St. Vincent’s Annie Clark and The Polyphonic Spree’s Tim DeLaughter), Alex was steeped in a truly ecumenical version of Americana, cutting his teeth on the modern staples of Springsteen and Dylan.
Dupree eventually found firm footing for his own songs in Austin where he founded The Trapdoor Band. In the course of four years, Alex released 3 full lengths and 2 EPs, was featured on NPR.org, and crisscrossed the country in his dusty station wagon – with bandmates and on his own – as well as being a constant member of Zookeeper, Chris Simpson’s (Mineral, The Gloria Record) first solo project.
Alex took a brief sabbatical from his own name, releasing 2012’s Elements of the Field under the moniker Idyl. These reverb-soaked songs continued to push the boundaries of the American folk tradition, feeling at once classic and on the teetering edge of modernity. String sections and soaring balladeer vocals meshed with short circuiting guitar amps and drum samples, all continuing to demonstrate Dupree’s mastery of verse and composition, as well as his prowess as a producer.
The 2010s also saw Dupree move to Los Angeles, where he obtained his Masters in Creative Writing from UCLA. While working on a body of poetry for his degree, Alex was continuing to write, record, and perform under a variety of hats, most of them cowboy shaped. 2016 saw the first EP from country outfit Mister Paradise, followed by the 2018 single “Mountain Home” and 2019’s full lengthTrouble In. 2019 also brought with it the debut release of Dawn & Dupree, Alex’s country western duo with Whitney Mower (Iva Dawn, They/Live) with their 7 inch single “California Worryin’.”
The next proper Alex Dupree album, You Winsome, You Lonesome, came out in 2017 on the Keeled Scales label. Channeling wide and far, Dupree comes across equal parts Willie Nelson, Dave Rawlings, and Lou Reed. Dupree and Keeled Scales followed up with 2022’s Thieves. Produced by Michael Krassner (Songs: Ohia, Simon Joyner, Earlimart) and mixed by Craig Ross (Patty Griffin Shearwater), Thieves is an album that feels at once like a triumphant return and a brilliant evolution – a songwriter moving through the American past/west and into a personal and social now.
Aside from his own work, Alex has produced projects for They/Live, The Whiskey Priest, and the upcoming album Dream Homes from Chris Simpson’s Mountain Time. He currently lives in Austin with his typewriter and home-made telecaster.
